Hinkley Point will be the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK

Hinkley Point C will be the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK. The planned twin unit UK EPR is capable of generating 3,260MW of secure, low carbon electricity for 60 years. That’s enough to power around 5 million UK homes.

BAM Nuttall in joint venture with Kier has been awarded the earthworks package for this development.

Kier BAM have already completed the site preparation works contract for this project and have since won the Earthworks package.

The earthworks scope includes:

  • 5.8million m³ excavation (50% in rock)
  • 450,000 m³ imported fill
  • 1.8million m³ material processing
  • Reinforced earth retaining walls
  • 14,500 m³ sprayed concrete
  • 105km ground nails
  • 84,000 m² slope protection
  • 240,000 m² roads and car parks with associated, ducting, drainage, lighting and surface earthing
  • 670m culverts
  • 700m seawall

To date we have undertaken site strip have entered into very detailed ECI exercises in interface management and phasing with the customer and other package contactors. We have also mobilised excavation plant in preparation for the bulk excavation and fill which will commence once the Final Investment Decision has been made.

Supply Chain and Sustainability

With a peak requirement of 600 staff over a two year period we are actively recruiting and engaging with supply chain partners for the earthworks package. We are fully committed to supporting EDF’s objective of enhancing the development of the local workforce. For the Site Preparation contract we placed over 72% of orders to Somerset companies.

We continue to actively promote opportunities for the local business community and supply chain at numerous events, including:

  • EDF / Local Business meetings in Bridgwater,
  • EDF / Into Somerset ‘Meet the Buyer’ supply chain events

We are also meeting regularly with Business Link and Into Somerset to promote opportunities.
