We’re proud of our bespoke, flagship Apprenticeships at BAM Nuttall – rated 3rd overall in the UK and first in construction by our own apprentices in 2018.

Our well-established relationships with education providers, such as Leeds College of Building and industry partners, including the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), allows us to innovate and improve continuously to lead our industry and support apprentices achieving their full potential.

BAM Nuttall Apprenticeships are available to anyone – whether you’re starting out your career or have been working in this industry or looking for an alternative career path. You’re offered:

We recruit over 30 apprentices a year. Our work with Network Rail, Highways England, Environment Agency, London City Airport, and others, all include commitments to offer apprenticeship opportunities over the next 5-10 years. We’re taking on and supporting more apprenticeships year on year, and use feedback to improve the experiences of working at BAM Nuttall all the time.

Technical Apprenticeships

Our bespoke technical apprenticeship programme is delivered as a four-year block release programme in partnership with Leeds College of Building with a new intake of apprentices starting in early October every year. You’ll achieve an industry-recognised Higher Apprenticeship in Civil Engineering or Quantity Surveying.

You’ll have the opportunity to progress to technical membership through a professional body, for engineering technician (EngTech) status with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or technical member (TMCInstCES) status with the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineers Surveyors (ICES).

At the end of the apprenticeship, you will be promoted to Assistant Engineer or Quantity Surveyor level within our business with the option to progress onto a degree level programme.

We’re looking for apprentices with the right attitude and ability to learn. The academic achievements for Technical Apprentices are GCSE (or equivalent) Maths grades B – A* (grades 5 – 9); English & Science at grades C – A*; (grades 4 – 9), or equivalent.

Recruitment for these apprenticeship opportunities is advertised on our website. Selected applicants are invited to attend a local assessment centre.

Craft Trades / Construction Apprenticeships

Our Craft Trade Apprenticeships are typically two to three years long, based at work or local colleges. These include:

·Formwork – creating wood or metal structures supporting concrete until it is self-supporting

·Steel fixing - positioning and securing steel bars and mesh used in reinforced concrete

·General construction – varied roles including drainage, concreting and kerb laying

·Plant maintenance – servicing and repairing of heavy machinery and construction equipment for projects

You’ll achieve an industry recognised Level 2 Apprenticeship in one of the following:

Steel fixing; General Construction Operative; Plant Maintenance. You can continue to progress your career, taking further time to grow in your role, or progressing towards a higher level NVQ.

The academic achievements for Craft Trade Apprentices are four GCSEs at grades D - A*; (grades 3 – 9), or equivalent. You’ll sit a test to identify English and Maths knowledge, skills and strengths.

Business Support Apprenticeships – Administration and Information Technology

Our Business Support Apprenticeships are for twelve months, combining work experience, line manager and colleagues’ support and work-based assessments for Business Administration and Information Communication and Technology (ICT).

Business Administration Apprenticeship: You’ll achieve Level 2 Apprenticeship in Business and Administration, developing your IT skills and applying your knowledge of Maths and English on a daily basis. You’ll be involved in improving the way our business works and support operational teams delivering for our customers.

The academic achievements for Business Support Apprentices are four GCSEs at grades D - A*; (grades 3 – 9), or equivalent.

Information Communications Technology (ICT): You’ll achieve Level 2 Apprenticeship in Information Technology, developing skills to support our business providing high-quality support for users by troubleshooting, minimising disruption and improving information sharing. We’re looking for apprentices with the right attitude and ability to learn. The academic achievements for Business Support Apprentices are five GCSEs at grades D - A*; (grades 3 – 9), or equivalent. Undergraduates and Graduates

Are you considering or already enrolled on a degree course to pursue an exhilarating and challenging role within the engineering industry?

We offer structured summer vacation or industrial ‘year out’ placements to quantity surveying and engineering undergraduates in civil, geotechnical or mechanical and electrical engineering.

During your placement, all of your theoretical learning will be put into context as you apply what you have learnt on a live project, gain valuable work experience and knowledge to complement your studies, and really make a valued contribution to the projects that we work on. In addition, the contacts that you make can become helpful resources when you are back at university.

With a long history of successful placements, many of our staff have joined us on placement and progressed to our graduate programme on achievement of their degree.

There is also the opportunity for financial sponsorship for the remainder of your studies aimed at top performers.

Graduates

We have well-established relationships with a range of professional institutions and industry partners and this has enabled us to innovate and remain at the forefront of helping our graduates to achieve professional qualifications, offering alternatives to formal academic study.

Civil engineering graduates

  • Starting as an assistant engineer you will progress to incorporated (IEng) and chartered engineer (CEng) status of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
  • Your programme will include approximately two years’ work experience under supervision, followed by up to one year in a design office. This may be with our internal design team or a recognised consulting engineer’s practice, from our network of design partners and key clients.
  • We offer a route to chartered engineer status for Higher National Diploma (HND) and Bachelors (BSc or BEng) candidates that does not require further academic study and the associated costs.

Quantity surveying graduates

  • Starting as an assistant quantity surveyor you will progress to corporate member status and of the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineer Surveyors (ICES).
  • Your programme will include approximately three years’ work experience under supervision.
  • Our ongoing learning provides for Engineering Council registration, to achieve technician (EngTech), incorporated (IEng) or chartered engineer (CEng) status.
  • Our primary professional institution for quantity surveying is ICES but graduates wishing to follow a route to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) will also be supported and encouraged within our programme of professional development.

Llinos Owen

Geotechnical engineers

  • Starting as an assistant geotechnical engineer you will progress to chartered member status of the Institution of Materials Minerals and Mining (IOM3).
  • Your programme will include around three years’ work experience under supervision.
  • We offer a route to chartered engineer status for Higher National Diploma (HND) and Bachelors (BSc or BEng) candidates that does not require further academic study and the associated costs.

We also employ a smaller number of graduates to undertake roles in specialist disciplines, eg mechanical and electrical engineering. Please contact us to find out more.
