Apprenticeships

Are you looking to start an inspiring career in civil engineering? We recruit over 30 apprentices a year, each forming a valuable part of our workforce. Our award winning apprenticeship programme will support you in gaining valuable skills, knowledge, experience and industry recognised qualifications.

We recruit over 30 apprentices a year, each forming a valuable part of our workforce.

Our programmes offer structured development and the opportunity to fulfil your ambitions.

Your time will be spent on exciting and varied projects, led by highly skilled and professionally qualified staff, to give you broad understanding and grounding in our business in preparation for your future career.

We have well-established relationships with a range of education providers and industry partners and this has enabled us to innovate and remain at the forefront of enabling our apprentices to achieve their full potential.

Technical apprenticeships offering structured career progression

  • Our technical apprenticeships are available to those who have achieved GCSE (or equivalent) in Math at grades A* to B and English and Science at grades A* to C.
  • We offer structured development programmers for civil engineering and quantity surveying, with recruitment running from 1 May to 31 July ready for the start of each programme in October.
  • Your programme will be over two years, combining work experience under supervision and blocks of academic learning with our education partner, Stephenson College, to gain a strong skills base in your chosen discipline.
  • You will gain BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (Civil Engineering), NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Construction Contracting Operations and progression to a trainee engineer or trainee quantity surveyor role.

On completion of your programme, the next stage of your development journey can begin. This may mean taking further time to grow in your role or progressing straight on to our Higher National Diploma (HND) programme.

  • Through our HND programme, you will gain HND Level 5 Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment (Civil Engineering) and progression to an assistant engineer or assistant quantity surveyor role.
  • You will also have the opportunity to gain technician engineer (EngTech) status with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) or technical (TCInstCES) status with the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineer Surveyors (ICES).

Apprentice - Mike Shaw

Craft trade apprenticeships

Our craft trade apprenticeships are available to those who show a passion for civil engineering, can demonstrate good team working and problem solving skills, and are effective communicators. Successful applicants will be required to sit a functional skills test to identify their current level of English and Math.

  • We offer structured development programmes for:

- formwork – creating structures from wood or metal to support fresh concrete until it is self-supporting

- steel fixing - positioning and securing the steel bars and mesh used in reinforced concrete

- general construction work – varied civil engineering roles including drainage, concreting and kerb laying

- plant maintenance – servicing and repairing of heavy machinery and equipment used on construction projects

Recruitment is undertaken periodically in line with our business requirements.

  • Your programme will be over two years, combining work experience under supervision and blocks of academic learning with our education partner, the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB).
  • You will gain an industry recognised apprenticeship in one of the following disciplines:

- Level 2 Apprenticeship in Formwork Operations

- Level 2 Apprenticeship in Steel fixing

- Level 2 Apprenticeship in General Construction Operative

- Level 2 Apprenticeship in Plant Maintenance (entry criteria is four GCSE grades A* to D)

On completion of your programme, the next stage of your development journey can begin. This may mean taking further time to grow in your role, or progressing towards a higher level NVQ.

Business support apprenticeships with office-based experience

Our business apprenticeships are currently available to those who have good organisation and communication skills, and enjoy working pro-actively as part of a team.

We offer structured development programmes for business administration and information communication and technology (ICT), with recruitment undertaken periodically in line with our business requirements.

Business administration

The business administration apprenticeship is available to those who have achieved four GCSE at grades A* to D.

  • Your programme will be over twelve months, combining work experience under supervision and completion of work based assessment.
  • You will gain a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Business and Administration, functional skills in ICT, Maths and English, as well as valuable involvement in assisting our business through the provision of high quality general administration.

ICT

The ICT apprenticeship is offered to those who have achieved five GCSE at grades A* to C.

  • Your programme will be over twelve months, combining work experience under supervision and completion of work based assessment.
  • You will obtain a Level 2 Apprenticeship in Information Technology and important skills in supporting our business through the provision of high quality ICT troubleshooting and information sharing.

Stephensons CollegE

Undergraduates and Graduates

Are you considering or already enrolled on a degree course to pursue an exhilarating and challenging role within the engineering industry?

We offer structured summer vacation or industrial ‘year out’ placements to quantity surveying and engineering undergraduates in civil, geotechnical or mechanical and electrical engineering.

During your placement, all of your theoretical learning will be put into context as you apply what you have learnt on a live project, gain valuable work experience and knowledge to complement your studies, and really make a valued contribution to the projects that we work on. In addition, the contacts that you make can become helpful resources when you are back at university.

With a long history of successful placements, many of our staff have joined us on placement and progressed to our graduate programme on achievement of their degree.

There is also the opportunity for financial sponsorship for the remainder of your studies aimed at top performers.

Graduates

Your time will be spent on exciting and varied projects, supported by highly knowledgeable and professionally qualified staff to develop your capabilities. To ensure that you gain wide-ranging experience and understanding in our business to prepare you for your future career, your development will be further reinforced through high quality lifelong learning, provided by our in-house Academy.

We have well-established relationships with a range of professional institutions and industry partners and this has enabled us to innovate and remain at the forefront of helping our graduates to achieve professional qualifications, offering alternatives to formal academic study.

Civil engineering graduates

  • Starting as an assistant engineer you will progress to incorporated (IEng) and chartered engineer (CEng) status of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
  • Your programme will include approximately two years’ work experience under supervision, followed by up to one year in a design office. This may be with our internal design team or a recognised consulting engineer’s practice, from our network of design partners and key clients.
  • We offer a route to chartered engineer status for Higher National Diploma (HND) and Bachelors (BSc or BEng) candidates that does not require further academic study and the associated costs.

Quantity surveying graduates

  • Starting as an assistant quantity surveyor you will progress to corporate member status and of the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineer Surveyors (ICES).
  • Your programme will include approximately three years’ work experience under supervision.
  • Our ongoing learning provides for Engineering Council registration, to achieve technician (EngTech), incorporated (IEng) or chartered engineer (CEng) status.
  • Our primary professional institution for quantity surveying is ICES but graduates wishing to follow a route to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) will also be supported and encouraged within our programme of professional development.

Llinos Owen

Geotechnical engineers

  • Starting as an assistant geotechnical engineer you will progress to chartered member status of the Institution of Materials Minerals and Mining (IOM3).
  • Your programme will include around three years’ work experience under supervision.
  • We offer a route to chartered engineer status for Higher National Diploma (HND) and Bachelors (BSc or BEng) candidates that does not require further academic study and the associated costs.

We also employ a smaller number of graduates to undertake roles in specialist disciplines, eg mechanical and electrical engineering. Please contact us to find out more.

  • Over 7000 directly employed and supply chain staff have achieved an NVQ through our accredited Centre.
  • 275 have achieved management or supervisory qualifications through our supervisory training programme, supporting their progression to supervisory and management roles.
  • An average of over 12,500 days of formal training have been organised for our 3,000 strong directly employed workforce over each of the last three years, with a further 2,400 days for our supply chain staff, including technical, commercial, safety, environment and quality training.
