Sustainability Report 2009/10

Sustainability report | Our people | Developing our people | Our performance

Our performance

It is important to us to ensure every employee is skilled and competent to perform well in their role. All employees engage in development each year to this end.

Overall in 2008 we delivered an average of 5.51 training days per employee. In addition to this our managers are trained to coach their staff which results in a great deal of development work taking place that isn't formally monitored.

Around 250 managers have been through the leadership training programme, each of which runs for a 4 to 6 month period. The programme aims to achieve a consistency in how BAM Nuttall managers lead and support their teams.

In 2008 we had a successful OFSTED Inspection for our Apprenticeship programme, a result we are delighted with.

Many of our staff hold memberships with professional bodies such as the Institution of Civil Engineering. We have a dedicated Professional Development Manager working with our people to achieve memberships across 6 institutions. Our success rate is 90% with the Institution of Civil Engineers and 100% with the Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors.

We offer a range of 92 different NVQs within BAM Nuttall, covering a number of different levels of achievement. Last year we awarded our 2000th NVQ to General Civil Engineering Operative, Wayne Kelly (see picture).

Each year we deliver up to 620 NVQs

The benefits to the individuals speak for themselves. For the company, we have seen a reduced turnover of staff, with retention rates up. Our staff have rewarded the company's willingness to support their development with greater loyalty.

In addition, 90% of site staff have achieved the Construction Skills Certification (CSCS).

BAM Nuttall benefits directly from its highly qualified workforce. 75% of our people are formally qualified to the level of their role, or above. They are also supervised by trained and qualified supervisors.
