Sustainability Report 2009/10

Sustainability report | Environment | Environmental Incidents | Our performance

Our performance

2008 saw the continued trend downwards for major environmental incidents that we have seen over the last four years. It also saw a decrease for the first time in minor incidents.

We had five major incidents

  1. An effluent spill to the river Humber. There was no visible pollution, and the plant responsible for the spillage was removed from site.
  2. Warning letter received in Cheshire for failure to complete waste transfer documentation. Documentation was completed and submitted.
  3. 400 litres chemical spill in Ross on Wye when a crane accidentally damaged a unit of aluminium sulphate. Pollution prevention measures were in place, and the spill was effectively cleaned up
  4. Some works took place in Stratford outside of permitted hours, potentially creating a noise nuisance. Permitted hours were reinforced through site briefings, with no recurrence.
  5. A flow meter had been incorrectly fitted leading to non-recording of discharge volumes to sewer. Close liaison with Thames Water and audit trail established to prevent recurrence.
In 2008, there was one prosecution, relating to the removal of a protected tree in Longwell Green, Bristol in October 2006. The company was fined £750, plus costs of £4,000.
