Sustainability Report 2009/10

Sustainability report | Environment | Reducing Waste | Our performance

Our performance

We separate our waste into three key categories.

These categories are:

  • Inert waste ‚Äì clean material, which is often dug out, or left over from demolition, on site. This might typically include soil, bricks, concrete, and other such materials.
  • Non-hazardous waste ‚Äì includes timber, and general office waste such as cardboard, timber, plastics, paper and food waste.
  • Hazardous waste ‚Äì materials contaminated with oil or heavy metals, chemicals, asbestos that are harmful to health
We aim in future to break down our waste records further into excavation, demolition and construction waste for each of these.

In 2008, inert waste was approximately 1.5m tonnes, of which 827,520 tonnes was re-used and 128,565 tonnes was recycled. 783,807 tonnes of hazardous waste were produced, of which 43,613 were able to be re-used, 443,589 were recycled and 288,346 were sent to landfill.
