Sustainability Report 2009/10

Our performance

During 2008, we were pleased that overall total reportable accidents, and accidents resulting in more than three days of absence, were down on the previous year.

We were disappointed that the number of major injuries rose slightly from 13 to 15. We undertake an ongoing review of any such incidents for causes so that we can improve existing procedures or practices to avoid repeats.

In 2008, we had five cable strikes, where we hit underground power cables. One such incident in particular resulted in serious burns for the employee concerned. This is clearly unacceptable, and we have begun a programme of increased awareness training for our staff and aim to bring this number down quickly.

We carried out regular encouragement to our staff to boost the reporting of near-miss incidents, and as a result saw the level of such reporting double on the previous year.

There were no prosecutions against BAM Nuttall in 2008 arising from health and safety issues. There was one prohibition notice that was issued for work that was carried out next to overhead power lines. There were no improvement notices issued against the company.

We introduced occupational health surveillance in 2008. This involved not only the legally required surveillance, but also optional lifestyle / wellbeing checks which included, for example, blood pressure, cholesterol and weight.

By March 2009, we had looked at 881 of our manual workforce. We discovered that there is a legacy problem (often arising from years before workers joined BAM Nuttall) with noise-induced hearing loss.

We also noted that the workforce in general, in line with the standard for the industry, tends to be overweight. As a result, we started promotion work on healthier diet and exercise as part of our overall Beyond Zero programme.
