Sustainability report | | About this report About this report
This report provides an overview of how BAM Nuttall has performed in making progress towards sustainability. It is broken into a number of key areas covering environment, people, health and safety and 'how we do business'.
What is sustainability?
Sustainability is made up of both environmental and social areas.
Environmental sustainability describes a state where people can live on the earth indefinitely. What does it take to achieve this? Three things. - Resources that are renewable (such as timber, for instance) are not used up faster than they can be renewed.
- Non-renewable resources (such as fossil fuels) are not consumed faster than they can be substituted by renewable resources.
- Wastes are not put into the environment faster than they can be absorbed.
We also recognise that these environmental areas will not be met unless social criteria are fulfilled as well. Poverty, for instance, is one of the main drivers that leads people to behave in ways that are not sustainable.
For BAM Nuttall, sustainability is about being a successful, profit-making business that has no adverse impact on the environment and a positive impact on society.
We recognise that all businesses - but particularly ones operating in a heavy-impact industry such as ours - need to change their approach to business to meet the challenges of sustainability.
Like most companies, we are near to the beginning of the journey. But our aim is not only to play our part, but to lead our industry in finding solutions to the common problems that face us.
This report may be useful for lots of audiences - but it is aimed at our three key audiences - our customers, our own people, and our supply chain. We have consulted with members of each of these audiences to get some sense of the issues they want to see covered, and in what depth.
When there is an additional commentary we would add to our treatment of an issue, aimed very specifically at one of these groups, you will see one or more buttons following the text labelled with which audience the additional commentary is aimed at.
