Sustainability Report 2009/10

Sustainability report | | Chief Executive Introduction

Chief Executive Introduction

Although the sustainability agenda has been around for some time, the sense of urgency and importance is now gaining momentum. This is of significance for a company like ours, because areas such as climate change will have a marked impact on construction.

We have certainly seen sustainability become more of a driver from the point of view of our customers. We've seen pre-qualification and tenders being judged on both environmental and social criteria. Likewise it is a big priority for our shareholder, the Royal BAM Group, whose mission states that they will take responsibility for people and the planet.

BAM Nuttall is committed to making progress in this area. Not only is it the right thing to do, but also there are straightforward financial implications to getting it wrong. If we waste energy, or create unnecessary waste that goes to landfill, that all impacts the bottom line, as do instances of non-compliance.

So many factors now show that companies like ours need to play the game for the long term, regardless of the fact that our profile for most projects is that we are around for a short while and then move on.

The communities where we are based expect it of us, and our staff expect it of the company's leadership as well. We have to play our part.

Leadership exists at all levels in our business and of course the senior management need to be behind the sustainability agenda.

But this is an issue for everyone to lead in. The principles of "Don't walk by" apply to sustainability matters just as they do to health and safety.

We all have our part to play in this, influencing all of those around us no matter what their role is. The sustainability agenda extends far beyond our work environments, and to truly create change we must ensure that our behaviour influences all parts of our lives, not just where we work.

This is the point at which BAM Nuttall will truly be leading the sustainability agenda. We are aiming to get to a point where, just as people are judging us on health and safety today, they will also judge us on the carbon agenda on the same basis.

When I visit our sites, there's no doubt at a site level that health and safety is at the top of our agenda. I am looking for sustainability to have an equal position.

Stephen Fox,
Chief Executive BAM Nuttall
