Dan Ford: Achieving higher levels

Dan Ford is an example of how joining BAM Nuttall via an apprenticeship can lead to even greater steps on the career development ladder.

He initially worked on site with the company whilst carrying out the two-year course in Kings Lynn that focused on all the areas that would help him with the practical work he was doing on site. This included a lot of the building blocks for civil engineering - such as math, and computer assisted design (CAD). And, of course, it gave a grounding in key social responsibility areas, such as environmental impact and health and safety.

After the apprenticeship, he did a Higher National Diploma. This took the practical skills to the next level, looking at a range of factors that affect the successful completion of a civil engineering project.

Dan believes that the route he has taken into the industry is "the best way" in. It is a paid way of learning, and marries the necessary theoretical knowledge with solid, on-the-ground experience.

Dan's goal is to achieve Chartership to demonstrate growing mastery of his profession. But he also has a keen interest for the environmental and health & safety issues.

"The type of education I'm getting from BAM Nuttall", he says, "you can't get anywhere else. You can't get it at university, or learn it from a book. It's brilliant".
