BAM Nuttall Graduate Training Scheme:
Every year we place new graduates on site and allow them to become important members of the construction team. We offer training schemes, working towards membership of professional institutions. ‘Under Agreement’.

However before you graduate or even start your university course BAM Nuttall can provide site placements and a chance of sponsorship!

BAM Nuttall Graduates
We recruit both graduates and HNC/D students for careers in civil, mechanical, electrical, geotechnical and environmental engineering and quantity surveying.

Join us and you will enjoy a unique opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills and competencies you need to become one of the senior managers of the future.

You will receive regular mentoring that allows you to gain significant ‘on-the-job’ experience, complemented by formal training courses.

We actively encourage career paths that lead to membership of recognised professional institutions. In addition, our staff development scheme gives all our employees the opportunity to realise their full potential.

Our Graduate training Schemes are approved and monitored by the following professional institutions:

  • ICE
  • ICES
  • RICS
  • IET
  • IMechE

Civil Engineering Graduates
Starting as an Assistant Engineer you will progress to incorporated and chartered status.
Right from the time you start you will be assigned a senior-level engineer who will be your mentor, and this person will support you through every stage of your professional development.

The agreed training period involves approximately two years, under supervision, on site followed by up to one year in a design office. You can either join our design team or go on secondment to a recognised Consulting Engineer’s practice.

We offer ‘Further Learning’ as part of the approved Training Programme to acknowledge the academic difference between a BEng and MEng course.
This provides the equivalent ‘on-the-job’ training to achieve MEng status to progress to full Chartered membership.

Case Study
Ben Goodman –
BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering, University of Plymouth

‘I found out about BAM Nuttall whilst searching for a summer placement during my first year at university. My interview with the company was great and I felt that I could really fit in.

As a graduate, I’m now working on the reconstruction of a pier, which again is really exciting and challenging.’

Quantity Surveying Graduates
As an Assistant Quantity Surveyor you will be an integral part of your project team, getting involved with financial and contractual management, advice on procurement, and resolution of disputes in order to help your project achieve a successful commercial outcome.

Right from the time you start you will be assigned a senior-level quantity surveyor who will be your mentor, and this person will support you through every stage of your professional development.

Joining us as a graduate Quantity Surveyor you will begin our approved graduate training programme. Our primary professional institution for quantity surveying staff is the Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors but graduates wishing to follow a route to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors will also be catered for within the training programme.

Sylvia Twum –
Intermediate Quantity Surveyor

‘Joining BAM Nuttall Ltd as an Assistant Quantity Surveyor and then progressing to Intermediate level in the last three and a half years has given me a variety of opportunities.

Throughout this period I have developed in my career through the enormous amount of support, training and experience from my line managers, team members and the company as a whole.’

Mechanical, Electrical and Environmental Engineering Graduates
We have similar training schemes in place for Mechanical and Electrical Engineers.

Both these schemes are similarly approved and monitored by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and the Institution of Engineering and Technology respectively, and will provide opportunities to get the necessary training and experience in preparation for the relevant professional examinations.

As with the Civil Engineering Programmes we are looking to include further learning to accommodate the BEng graduates.

We are currently progressing with a Training Programme, which will be approved and monitored by the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment, for graduates qualified in Environmental Engineering.

We also provide an approved training programme to accommodate our geotechnical engineers with the Institution of Materials Minerals and Mining.

Ilya Savva – CEng MIMechE M&E Engineer

‘My career began with a position at BAM Nuttall during my university vacations, as an Engineering Assistant on the London Underground Connect Project, in March 2000. I experienced many aspects of a large construction project with regular site visits to assist in surveying and installation. I learnt fundamental principles of design and quality management which have aided my career ever since.

Following my graduation I returned to BAM Nuttall and was offered the permanent position of Design Team Leader. The opportunity of being responsible for my team provided management, client liaison and project programming experience. As my career progressed I took on greater responsibility within the department. I was promoted to M&E Engineer and have overseen complex multi-disciplined M&E projects on site. As an engineer for BAM Nuttall I have been pleased with the support offered to me by senior engineers, and with the opportunities and experiences offered through the diverse range of projects that the company undertakes.’
