I joined BAM ten years ago on the apprenticeship and HND programme, straight after completing my GCSEs. I started my career as an Engineering Technician and have now progressed my way up to working as a Site Agent on rail projects.

Joining the construction industry wasn’t always my plan. Originally, I intended to go to college to study physics, maths, economics, and law. However, I realised that what I really wanted was a hands-on learning experience, rather than the classroom. What interested me in particular was structural and mechanical engineering. So I decided to start pursuing a career instead.

My first project was a relief road off the M4. It was a challenging but also very insightful introduction to the industry.

This began my journey with BAM. I spent those first two years working on highways and drainage projects in the West Country. After that I was able to spend a few years working on major projects, including a scheme for AWE.

What I enjoy most about my job is the challenge and variety the industry brings every day. No two days are ever the same…whether I’m helping the installation of something on site or in meetings in the office, reviewing digital models or planning schedules – it never gets boring!

My one piece of advice to anyone thinking of joining this industry: join the apprenticeship scheme. That’s the route I’d advise anyone to follow. Being out on site certainly helped me develop my own career. Having the opportunity to physically do the role, in that hands-on approach, was the best learning experience I could have had.
