If you want to get straight into work after your degree or HND, one of our graduate programmes could be the right path for you.
We offer structured development in a professional workplace environment, leading to chartered engineer or surveyor status, without any more academic study.
We have well-established relationships with a range of professional institutions and industry partners. This means we can innovate our programmes ahead of the industry and nurture your skills to help you meet your ambitions.
We also offer summer and ‘year out’ placements to engineering and surveying undergraduates, where you can put theory into action on a live project.
This is your chance to gain valuable hands-on work experience before you graduate and, in many cases, could lead to a full-time graduate position.

Starting as an assistant engineer you will have the opportunity to progress to incorporated (IEng) and chartered engineer (CEng) status of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
Starting as an assistant quantity surveyor you will have the opportunity to progress to corporate member status of the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineer Surveyors (ICES).
Starting as an assistant geotechnical engineer you will have the opportunity to progress to chartered member status of the Institution of Materials Minerals and Mining (IOM3).

We partner with Leeds College of Building, who help to provide you with the knowledge, skills and experience required for a successful career in Quantity Surveying or Civil Engineering.
You will work towards a Level 4 Apprenticeship in either Civil Engineering or Quantity Surveying. This includes a HNC and Technician Membership of ICE (Institute of Civil Engineers) or ICES (Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors).
After completing the Level 4 apprenticeship, you will be given the opportunity to top-up your qualification to a full degree, through a Level 6 apprenticeship.
England and Wales
Our award-winning course, open to English and Welsh students, will be split between learning skills on site and attending college on a block release programme.
All apprentices will attend Leeds of Building on a block release basis, staying in student accommodation provided by BAM Nuttall.
Scotland
Our Graduate Apprenticeships in Scotland are designed for people who’ve completed their Highers and are looking for an exciting career in Civil Engineering or Quantity Surveying. Apprentices will attend either Strathclyde or Glasgow Caledonian Universities and work towards a Level 6 Graduate Apprenticeship.

This apprenticeship will give you a broad insight into how our business works. You’ll support operational teams delivering services for our customers and develop your IT, Maths and English skills in a business environment.
After the 12-month programme, you’ll achieve a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Business and Administration.

We directly employee our workforce and will invest in you to reach your full potential in your chosen career. Whether you’re a site operative and want to become a general foreman, or a section engineer and want to become a site agent, we offer several externally recognised programmes delivered through our own assessment centres that will give you the skills and knowledge you need to progress to the next level.
Our internal Supervisory Training Programme (STP) is delivered to approximately 40 of our gangers, foremen and supervisors each year and is listed on the Scottish Credit Qualification Framework (SCQF). You can undertake this programme if you have sufficient site experience at operative level or similar, are carrying out the role of supervisor or you’re being considered for future promotion to supervisor on site.
The programme is made up of 14 modules, all of which can be certified individually, or after completion of all 14 modules, is recognised with a SCQF Level 6 Certificate in Civil Engineering Supervision. After completing the programme, you’ll have the opportunity to gain further ILM and VQ qualifications.
We offer this programme to newly recruited managers who need a full induction to the role. The programme covers the core management skills required for all of our management roles. If you’re an existing manager you’ll also be offered the opportunity to attend either the entire course or individual modules as required. This programme is also recognised with SCQF Level 7 Diploma in Managing People in Construction.
Since launching our Vocational Qualification centre in 2000, we’ve delivered over 8000 VQs to our employees and over 2700 VQs to our supply chain partners. Our specialist assessors are all employees in our business and deliver around 350 vocational qualifications each year. We have accreditation for all civil engineering occupations and qualification routes from level 2 to level 6, suitable for our people and supply chain.
We use these internal resources to help support and develop you through the recognised industry competence schemes and qualification routes, including helping you to gain and maintain CSCS cards.
