GRADUATES

Graduates

If you want to get straight into work after your degree or HND, one of our graduate programmes could be the right path for you.

We offer structured development in a professional workplace environment, leading to chartered engineer or surveyor status, without any more academic study.

We have well-established relationships with a range of professional institutions and industry partners. This means we can innovate our programmes ahead of the industry and nurture your skills to help you meet your ambitions.

CIVIL ENGINEER


Starting as an assistant engineer you will have the opportunity to progress to incorporated (IEng) and chartered engineer (CEng) status of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

  • Your programme will include approximately two years’ work experience under supervision, followed by up to one year in a design office.
  • We offer various routes to chartered engineer status for Higher National Diploma (HND) and Bachelors (BSc or BEng) candidates without any more academic study.

QUANTITY SURVEYOR


Starting as an assistant quantity surveyor you will have the opportunity to progress to corporate member status of the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineer Surveyors (ICES).

  • Your programme will include around three years’ work experience under supervision.
  • Our ongoing learning provides for Engineering Council registration, to achieve technician (EngTech), incorporated (IEng) or chartered engineer (CEng) status.
  • Our primary professional institution for quantity surveying is ICES but you can also choose to follow a route to the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)

GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEER


Starting as an assistant geotechnical engineer you will have the opportunity to progress to chartered member status of the Institution of Materials Minerals and Mining (IOM3).

  • Your programme will include around three years’ work experience under supervision.
  • We offer a route to chartered engineer status for Higher National Diploma (HND) and Bachelors (BSc or BEng) candidates without any more academic study.

We also employ a smaller number of graduates in specialist disciplines, eg mechanical and electrical engineering, digital construction and project controls. Please contact us to find out more.

APPRENTICESHIPS

Apprentices

Our apprenticeships are ranked 10th in the Top 100 Apprenticeship Employers for 2019-2020, and give you a well-rounded industry springboard for a career in civil engineering, whether you want to explore construction programmes or business and IT.

Over the course of your apprenticeship programme, you’ll build on your current skills, and discover a whole host of new ones. Designed to be both structured and diverse, BAM Nuttall apprenticeships give you the broad knowledge and professional confidence to get to the next stage of your career or studies.

We also offer summer and ‘year out’ placements to engineering and surveying undergraduates, where you can put theory into action on a live project.

This is your chance to gain valuable hands-on work experience before you graduate and, in many cases, could lead to a full-time graduate position.

For exceptional candidates, we can offer financial sponsorship for the remainder of your degree.

TECHNICAL APPRENTICESHIPS


In partnership with Leeds College of Building, our bespoke Technical Apprenticeship Programme is an amazing opportunity to enter the engineering industry after your GCSEs or A-levels.

Over a 4-year programme, you’ll achieve an industry-recognised higher apprenticeship in Civil Engineering or Quantity Surveying.

At the end of the apprenticeship, you will have the opportunity to be promoted to assistant engineer or quantity surveyor, with the option to progress onto a degree level programme.

You’ll need GCSE Maths grades 9 - 5 (A-B), and English & Science at grades 9 - 4 (A-C); or equivalent.

Recruitment for these apprenticeship opportunities is from October - March each year, with the new intake beginning in September.

CRAFT TRADES APPRENTICESHIPS


These apprenticeships give you the practical knowledge to start a hands-on career in construction-led engineering. After your two or three-year programme, you’ll achieve a Level 2 apprenticeship in one of the following:

  • Steel Fixing
  • General Construction
  • Plant Maintenance
  • Groundwork

After this, you’ll have the option to progress towards a higher level NVQ or continue working. You’ll need four GCSEs at grades 9 - 3 (A*-D), or equivalent. You’ll sit a test to identify your skills and strengths, including English and Maths.

BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION APPRENTICESHIPS


This apprenticeship will give you a broad insight into how our business works. You’ll support operational teams delivering services for our customers and develop your IT, Maths and English skills in a business environment.

After the 12-month programme, you’ll achieve a Level 3 Apprenticeship in Business and Administration.

You’ll need four GCSEs at grades 9 - 4 (A*-C), or equivalent, to do this apprenticeship.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AND DIGITAL APPRENTICESHIPS


We offer the following IT and Digital apprenticeship programmes:

  • IT apprenticeship – on this apprenticeship you’ll provide IT support to our business functions and sites and learn a wide range of applied IT skills to kickstart your career. You’ll learn how to provide high-quality support for users by troubleshooting IT problems, minimising disruption and improving information sharing.
  • Data Analyst Apprenticeship – on this apprenticeship you’ll collect, study and analyse a range of data from across our sites in order to provide valuable insights for our business.
  • Digital Engineering Apprenticeship – this apprenticeship is an exciting mix of Engineering and IT. You will be involved in producing 3D and 4D models for use in our tenders and projects.

You’ll need four GCSEs at grades 9 - 4 (A*-C), or equivalent, to do these apprenticeship programmes.

DEVELOPING YOUR CAREER

We directly employee our workforce and will invest in you to reach your full potential in your chosen career. Whether you’re a site operative and want to become a general foreman, or a section engineer and want to become a site agent, we offer several externally recognised programmes delivered through our own assessment centres that will give you the skills and knowledge you need to progress to the next level.

SUPERVISORY TRAINING PROGRAMME


Our internal Supervisory Training Programme (STP) is delivered to approximately 40 of our gangers, foremen and supervisors each year and is listed on the Scottish Credit Qualification Framework (SCQF). You can undertake this programme if you have sufficient site experience at operative level or similar, are carrying out the role of supervisor or you’re being considered for future promotion to supervisor on site.

The programme is made up of 14 modules, all of which can be certified individually, or after completion of all 14 modules, is recognised with a SCQF Level 6 Certificate in Civil Engineering Supervision. After completing the programme, you’ll have the opportunity to gain further ILM and VQ qualifications.

BAM MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME


We offer this programme to newly recruited managers who need a full induction to the role. The programme covers the core management skills required for all of our management roles. If you’re an existing manager you’ll also be offered the opportunity to attend either the entire course or individual modules as required. This programme is also recognised with SCQF Level 7 Diploma in Managing People in Construction.

VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (VQs)


Since launching our Vocational Qualification centre in 2000, we’ve delivered over 8000 VQs to our employees and over 2700 VQs to our supply chain partners. Our specialist assessors are all employees in our business and deliver around 350 vocational qualifications each year. We have accreditation for all civil engineering occupations and qualification routes from level 2 to level 6, suitable for our people and supply chain.

We use these internal resources to help support and develop you through the recognised industry competence schemes and qualification routes, including helping you to gain and maintain CSCS cards.
