Rothera Discovery Building - 2020-2024

In January 2020, BAM began construction of the new ‘Discovery Building’, at Rothera, the largest British Antarctic Survey (BAS) research station, which will replace the current science and operations building

Given its name to commemorate the discovery of Antarctica 200 years ago, the building will be under construction until 2024. Replacing a number of buildings, the modernisation will introduce more energy efficient systems including heat recovery generators, solar panels, enhanced insulation and snow modelling influenced the shape of the building.

Groundworks for the new building have begun in early 2020, with 58 Ground anchors installed to create the foundations. The planned two-storey 4,500m2 building will accommodate preparation areas for field expeditions, a central store, medical facility, offices, recreational spaces, workshops and areas for plant.

Minimising the environmental impact of Rothera Research Station is a key part of the project. The team have integrated BREEAM accreditation and assessment system, developed by construction partner Ramboll, in collaboration with the Building Research Establishment (BRE), to ensure the highest environmental and sustainability standards are met.

Work will recommence later 2020, when Antarctic summer time begins in October/November.
