In September 2019, the new polar research vessel, RRS Sir David Attenborough was named at an event at Cammell Laird, Birkenhead. Officially named by HRH Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the event saw thousands of locals have an audience with Sir David Attenborough himself.

Members of the AIMP construction partnership, attended the three day Ice Worlds festival which showcased exhibitions about the different aspects of polar research, including the modernisation programme.

The AIMP partnership, were proud to be a key sponsor and supporter of the event. The team relished the opportunity to highlight the engineering expertise involvement for this global endeavour. Hundreds of local children collected pamphlets about careers in construction and engineering – and had a go on the X-Box controller to simulate manipulating the arm of a crane. Younger participants exercised their modelling skills with a ‘build your own wharf’ Lego challenge.

Martha McGowan, project manager for Rothera wharf said: “Having been to the naming ceremony for the RRS Sir David Attenborough, it helped to put our second build season into perspective. We recognise the importance our project has in helping BAS continue to deliver frontier science.”
