BAM Doosan joint venture appointed to design & construct Thames Water’s new Guildford sewage treatment works

The BAM Nuttall and Doosan Enpure joint venture has been awarded a five-year contract to design, construct, and commission a new sewage treatment works for Thames Water in Guildford. The works will replace the current sewage treatment facilities, enabling Guildford Borough Council to develop 1,500 high quality homes, boosting local job opportunities, and benefiting many families in and around the Surrey area.

The new works will be constructed at Slyfield Industrial Estate on land previously used as landfill, approximately 0.7 km from the existing premises. The new treatment site design leaves space for future expansion to cater for Guildford’s growing population. The project is expected to be completed in 2026.

The project will include the construction of a 1.5km, 1,500mm diameter tunnel to transport the sewage from Guildford’s existing sewer network to the new site. The work comprises of preliminary, primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment stages to meet environmental requirements. The treated water will then be discharged to the River Wey via a newly constructed outfall.
