BAM Nuttall employees’ responses to Mind Workplace Wellbeing Index achieves ‘Gold’ status result

16 June, 2021

BAM Nuttall is proud to be awarded ‘Gold Achieving Excellence’ award at this year’s Mind Workplace Wellbeing ceremony.

In the online Mind ceremony, BAM Nuttall alongside 114 other organisations came together on 8 June to celebrate global achievements in taking action on employee mental health. After a challenging year, mental health support has been at the forefront for many businesses.

The Gold award is given to employers who successfully embed mental health into policies and practices, demonstrating long term and in depth commitment.

Adrian Savory, Chief Executive said: “This award is for the people in our business who make a difference day in and day out for others. Thanks to the commitment and mutual support of colleagues in our business – our 180 Health and Wellbeing champions – focus on wellbeing across our industry is so important as the data tells us in the construction industry.”

In 2020 BAM Nuttall’s focus intensified, and investment increased to support people’s health and wellbeing, increase diversity and improve inclusion. The correlation between wellbeing and belonging is an important factor for involving and including as many colleagues as possible.

Providing people with support including flexible hours, colleague mentoring and regular practical health advice – as well as developing numerous opportunities for people to connect virtually, sharing their experiences, ideas and passions - has been a significant area of investment and attention across the business. We see a continuing increase in the uptake of the volunteering day and two wellbeing days offered to all employees in addition to their holiday.

We have an ongoing programme of activities to raise awareness and sources of support for mental health issues and continue to create office and site based wellbeing rooms - all to help employees manage and openly speak about their mental health. We captured and shared COVID-19 specific case studies, including how we created virtual offices to combat loneliness.

As well as extensive training and monitoring of safety policies, processes and procedures, we promote wellbeing throughout the Company and with our supply chain. Activities such as webinars, with experts from Bupa, site Toolbox Talks, onsite nurses, health checks and advice offered, which extend to families of employees and suppliers. Over 1,900 employees were monitored by the occupational health team in 2020.

We share the ambitions and initiatives with our client’s and in 2021, we collaborated with several partners, including providing sponsorship and support to Network Rail’s Wellbeing Live webinars. We promote and take part in CECA’s industry campaign, ‘Stop. Make a Change’ wellbeing and safety.
