BAM’s specialist construction teams are travelling home to the UK, after another five-month season in Antarctica, modernising British Antarctic Survey research stations. The final construction team members left the station on the RRS Sir David Attenborough on 28 April.

The 54-strong on site construction team have celebrated a number of construction milestones this season. The Discovery Building – a new scientific and operational support facility - has been made weathertight and internal works in the building are progressing at pace.

The runway has also been upgraded, maintaining safe and reliable flying operations into Rothera for the future, to enable vital polar science to take place.

As construction partner to the British Antarctic Survey, BAM has now completed four years of construction in Antarctica, replacing old buildings and infrastructure with modern and energy efficient infrastructure. BAM is supported on site by Technical Advisor, Ramboll, and Designer, Sweco.

The Antarctic Infrastructure Modernisation Programme was commissioned by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC-UKRI) to enable a world-leading capability to ensure that Britain remains at the forefront of climate, biodiversity and ocean research in the Polar Regions. The Discovery Building is scheduled for completion in 2025 and the construction team will return this November ahead of a busy schedule where the internal fit-out of the building will take place.
